Eyes wide shut

A lot of times in life we don't have a choice that we become who we are without trying or choosing even though all along we have been trying so hard to discover who we are. The thing is everyday we come closer to understanding who we are. Each time we have a conversation with someone they teach us something about ourselves. Each time we fight with someone we learn more about how to deal with ourselves. The thing is we may not see when it is happening and it may not even hit us till weeks later but when it happens we feel closer to freedom. We begin to understand what is like to be who we are. The truth is we are all searching for something that is right infront of us...Just open your eyes.

You cut me down to size
And opened up my eyes
Made me realize
What I could not see

All the streets you're walking on
A thousand houses long
Well, that's where I belong
And you belong with me
Not swallowed in the sea

-Coldplay "Swallowed in the Sea"

We are not as invincible as we think

Lately I have been much aware of humanity and things that challenge my idea on it. Thus, my large interest in this film Babel. Now, I know many people have things against Brad Pitt but if you hold a prejudice against this movie for that reason you will regret it. This movie challenges our culture and the world in which we live. I find it interesting when America is compared to nations such as rome and the tower of Babel because I think too often as Americans we lose sight of our own mortality as a country. We are going to fall someday and we are going to become weaker than another country. There are times I wish I did not associate myself as an American but others when I am glad I do...but I think America needs to face the fact that we are not as invinicible and powerful as we may seem.

When you are taken out of your own element and placed somewhere else where you don't understand the people around you. You are faced with violence you only thought existed in movies you realize how little you are in this world. Americans view themselves as being much more important than we really are. When we face people who see each person around them as just another kill on their belt and death is simply a part of life it brings us back to reality because in America we only try to preserve life and we worship life. It is not something to be taken for granted but yet we do in other ways than we may realize. Sometimes it just makes me sick to watch our culture and see how we live and then view the way in which more than half of the world lives and realize that we are so ignorant and niave to the world in which we claim to control.
